Compression Sclerotherapy

BEFORE TREATMENT

Take a shower and have your normal breakfast or lunch on the day of your treatment. Do not apply any cream, lotion, or moisturizer to your legs.

Avoid aspirin and aspirin-containing medication for 5 days prior to your treatment.

Wear loose-fitting clothes and comfortable walking shoes.

Remember to always bring your compression stockings with you.

AFTER TREATMENT

You will have cotton balls held in place by adhesive tape at every injection site. You may remove these 2 hours after your treatment session.

If your physician chooses to bandage your leg, this should be removed 24 hours later or as instructed by your physician.

Compression stockings or panty hose are worn immediately after your procedure. These are designed to decrease swelling, provide compression to the treated veins, and promote collateral circulation. Wear them for 3 days continuously, taking them off only for showering. Wear them for an additional 4 days, but you may take them off at bedtime.

Walking is encouraged from 20-30 minutes per day. Avoid strenuous activity like jogging, bicycling, stair-master, elliptical, weight lifting, and high-impact aerobics for one week after your treatment session.

Expect to see bruising, pigment changes, localized tenderness, or lumpiness. These are all temporary conditions that usually resolve weeks after the procedure. You may apply Arnica gel to the skin to assist in fading the bruising.

Contact Vein Care Specialists' staff if you experience prolonged tenderness, redness, or warmth along treated areas; excessive swelling in the treated limb; chest pain and/or shortness of breath.

Activity
You may return to normal activities as soon as possible. In general, your physical activity will be determined by how your legs feel. Walking from 20-30 minutes per day is encourages, but do refrain from strenuous activity for 7 days. In the early days following your procedure, your legs may tire more easily and you may experience some swelling. If this is the case, simply sit and elevate them above heart level if possible.

Bandaging
Pressure bandaging and compression stockings put in place after the rpocedure are designed to decrease swelling, promote collateral circulation, and increase the rate of healing. The bandages should be removed 3 days after the procedure by our staff at our office, or you may choose to remove them at home. You will then wear compression stockings or panty hose for an additional 4 days, removing them only at bedtime. Steri-strips may be removed 7 days after the procedure if they haven't already fallen off.

Bathing-Showering
Before the bandages are removed, you may shower if you protect the leg
with the plastic covering that is provided for you. After the bandaging is removed, you may shower or bathe normally. Blot over the steri-strips, do not rub. Ensure all areas are thouroughly dried.

Discoloration
It is normal to experience some tenderness and lumpiness at the access site and along the area of the treated vein. Expect to also see some bruising and maybe some pigment changes. All are temporary conditions and usually resolve within a few weeks following surgery.
